Homage paid to Mumbai blast victims at YFE march

SAYING IT WITH BALLOONS: Youngsters forming a human chain in Hyderabad on Sunday in protest against caste-based reservations and Mumbai blasts.

HYDERABAD: The city chapter of Youth For Equality (YFE) organised a candlelight walk on Necklace Road on Sunday in protest against the proposal to introduce caste-based reservations in educational institutions. The walk was also meant to express solidarity with the victims of Mumbai blasts.

Balloons in tri-colour carrying YFE banners were released into the air amidst cheers before starting off the walk. The crowd consisted mainly of techies from prominent IT companies in the city. The walk gained momentum as curious onlookers and Sunday revellers, on knowing the cause, joined midway. The walk was a part of the protests being conducted by the group across the country.

Police intervene

Over 200 students holding banners and shouting slogans against reservation marched towards the Secretariat, but were stopped by the police before they reached the destination. Before dispersing, the crowd paid a two-minute homage to those who died in the blast.

"With the monsoon session about to begin, the Reservation Bill will be passed soon. The eight-week period given by the Supreme Court has ended and the Government has filed no affidavit so far. Neither has the Supreme Court issued any stay order," says Shreyas, city convener of YFE.
