Japanese training ship in Kochi

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Kojima, a training ship of the Japanese Coast Guard, which called at Kochi on Sunday, will leave for Singapore on Tuesday.

This is the first visit to Kochi by a Japanese Coast Guard ship. The vessel, with 88 crew members, has been on an ocean training programme from May 12, which is scheduled to end on August 12.

Meeting in a game

A high-ranking official of the Indian Coast Guard said that out in Kochi, the guests had a friendly volleyball match with their Indian counterparts.

"There was an interaction between the trainees as well, at the Coast Guard Training Centre. They were shown a movie on the Indian Coast Guard and pollution-response demonstration. Our ships have been to Japan for interaction and for exercises." A Korean Coast Guard ship had called at Chennai earlier this month.

He said such visits increase mutual confidence in the changing global scenario and give a boost to inter-operability.

The cooperation will help in addressing challenges at sea, he said.

A press release issued by the Indian Coast Guard says that the Indo-Japan Coast Guard cooperation programme, which began in 2000, had enabled both the forces to learn from each other through mutual visits by ships, exercises at sea, anti-piracy operations and maritime safety.
