COIMBATORE: The concept of virtual classrooms will bridge the gap between rural and urban students, said M. Sivakumar, vice-president of Everonn Systems India Limited. Launching the online educational programme at Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science here on Monday, he said: "Having a classroom without a class teacher is a very big challenge, but it is the evolution of a new mode of education." This technology-enabled classroom dissolved the distance barrier and students could have live interactions with faculty members from various institutions through the system. Everonn provided the technology for more than 100 colleges in South India. The satellite-based education system was planning to reach out to five million students by 2010. Though it was not a conventional method of education, the student could raise questions to the teacher and get the doubts cleared in the virtual classroom, Mr. Sivakumar said. Also, a large image of the teacher would be projected on the LCD projector set up for the purpose. "So, the student would not feel the absence of a class teacher," he said. The lectures would be given from Everonn's studio in Chennai, which would be received by a satellite installed in the college. Swami Anuraganandaji Maharaj of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya said that though the traditional system of education would continue to have its relevance, the education system should adapt itself to the developments in technology.
