dated July 25, 1956: Elections in February next

Mr. Sukumar Sen, Chief Election Commissioner, told pressmen in Bangalore on July 24 that general elections would be held in the first half of February next. They would have to be phased over a period of 15 days as was done last time. He said he was asking the States to limit the polling to a period of 15 days and announce the results as quickly as possible. When each ballot box was counted the results would be announced immediately without waiting for the results in all the other boxes in a constituency. Mr. Sen met pressmen at the end of a two-day meeting of the Chief Electoral Officers of seven States. Answering a question he said ballot boxes used in the last general elections would be used this time also. It was true that there were some allegations immediately after the last general elections that the boxes could be tampered with. But no one had proved it. If the boxes were properly sealed and locked they could not be tampered with, he added.
