dated July 25, 1956: Resignation accepted

The acceptance of the Finance Minister, Mr. C.D. Deshmukh's resignation by the President was officially announced on July 24. A communique from the Cabinet Secretariat said the Prime Minister would hold charge of the Ministry of Finance. Obviously, Mr. Nehru has not yet decided as to who should be the next Finance Minister. There was speculation that Home Minister Pant might hold charge of the Finance Ministry also until the general elections. Apparently, Pandit Pant felt it would be too heavy a strain on him at this stage. The suggestion appears to have gained support that whoever was appointed the Finance Minister should take over sufficiently early, so that he could understand the implications of framing the Budget for the first year of the Second Plan.
