District administration to involve educational institutions in organising the event

  • District administration sends proposal for Rs. 5 lakh to the Government

HUBLI: The Dharwad district administration will organise "Dharwad Zilla Utsav- 2006" in November. A preliminary meeting in this regard was held here on Monday. The last "Zilla Utsav" was held in 1999.

Fifty persons, including senior writers, artists, theatre persons, participated in the meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar.

Mr Srikar said the objective of the meeting was to involve all those related to the cultural field and make it a "people's utsav" rather than a "government utsav."

The idea was to make it a yearly affair by giving it an institutionalised set up, he said.

He said a proposal of Rs. 5 lakh had been sent to the State Government and the district administration planned to mobilise Rs. 10 lakh from various organisations.

Poet Channaveera Kanavi, writer Siddhaling Pattanashetty and artists from the district gave suggestions to make the event a success. The meeting decided to constitute eight committees — welcome committee, organising committee, cultural committee, information committee, finance committee, transport committee, souvenir committee and procession committee.

To select members for the committees, the meeting decided to set up sub committees.

Mr. Srikar told The Hindu that the district administration would involve the educational institutions, including the universities, and students' organisations in organising the event. Some more meetings would be orgasied involving all the stakeholders, the Deputy Commissioner added.
