PONDICHERRY: In an office that is normally visited by officials of Revenue, Education and Art and Culture, a visit by a group of young scouts and guides from France was a pleasant change. The six-member group, led by Pauline Victor, on Monday visited the Education Secretary B V Selvaraj's office and handed over around 200 French books to the Kanchi Mamunivar Postgraduate Centre for its library. The students, in the age group of 18-19 years, are from different universities in Paris and have been teaching French to students of the Pensionnat De Jeunes Filles School on Rue Dumas. The students - Pauline Victor, Audrey Hicke, Charlotte Brunet, Marie Auffret, Anne-Laure Courturier and Maxime Barge - chose to come to Pondicherry because of their interest in the place. "We have heard of Pondicherry and because of its French past, its French-speaking population and period architecture we wanted to come here." Their trip has been organised by Brigitte Peltier of the Sante Etuges Musique Espoir (Health, Studies, Music and Hope). Speaking to reporters Mr. Selvaraj said the PG centre would get a bigger library. "At present it is attached to the library of the Tagore Arts College. We want to strengthen the French Department's library. We are laying special emphasis on French education, especially due to BPOs wanting more French speaking persons."
