Letters to the Editor
The army and police personnel deserve our hearty congratulations for rescuing Prince, the five-year-old boy who fell into a 60-foot pit while playing in a village in Haryana. The electronic media and the people contributed much more to the cause though. People from all walks of life irrespective of their community prayed for the rescue of the child, which was heartening.
U.K.S. Srinath,
The real hero is the five-year-old who retained his grit and composure under circumstances in which older people would have died of panic.
Air Cmde Raghubir Singh (retd.),
In little Prince's tribulations was an ode to humanity. The events of the last two days involving the rescue operation showed that humanity is alive. Caste, social strata, and other man-made barriers were nowhere in sight. It took a child to awaken that slumbering giant, humanity.
The entire nation is relieved at the successful rescue operation. It is gratifying to note that every Indian was anxious about the boy's safety. We are proud of the army for the wonderful job it did. Setting aside the blame game, it is for the authorities to ensure that such accidents do not recur. Even metropolitan cities have gaping holes and open drains, which can pose serious risk particularly during the rains.
Hema Srinivasan,
No words are enough to express our gratitude to all those who made strenuous efforts to rescue the child. We all may pray for his early recovery from the trauma.
P. Achuthan,
Thankfully, the ordeal ended on a happy note. The army deserves acclaim. Prince's courage and resilience are amazing. The incident has proved the oneness of Indians.
N. Divakar,
The manner in which the people united in prayer was heartening. It truly demonstrated that by cultures we are many but as a nation we are one.
Canistan Zacharias,
The Haryana Chief Minister's announcement of Rs.2 lakh to the boy is baffling. For what, may we, the taxpayers, ask?
G. Anand,
The Government should bear all the medical expenses of the boy, as promised by the Prime Minister. But why should the State Government pay him Rs.2 lakh? Because the media covered the rescue operation?
While I extend my sympathy to the little boy and admire his courage, I wonder what is the need for a monetary reward. The taxpayers' money can be put to better use. The Government seems bent on gaining political mileage from the issue.
Adwait Deshpande,
