BANGALORE: The Government is facing a shortage of 675 doctors in its hospitals. Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok told presspersons here on Monday that the Government needed specialist doctors too for its hospitals. It would issue a notification for recruiting 500 doctors to serve in rural areas in 10 days. The proposed recruitment drive would be in compliance with the D.M. Nanjundappa committee's recommendations on correcting regional imbalances in the State. The Government had decided to give preference to young medical graduates hailing from the 39 most backward taluks of the North Karnataka region in the appointments, he said. It would recruit the doctors directly as appointing them through the Karnataka Public Service Commission would cause delay. The recruited doctors would have to serve in rural areas. Certain recruitment rules were being formulated to that effect, he added. During the recently concluded general transfers, the Government had posted many doctors to rural areas. But some of them were not to willing to serve there and were making questionable efforts to get their transfer orders cancelled. The Government would take stringent measures, including suspension, against such doctors if they failed to report for work within 10 days, he warned.
