News Analysis
In "The transformation of IBM" ("Business Review", July 24, 2006), it was said that Lou Gerstner took over the reins in 1992. A reader says that this is incorrect. Mr. (Louis V.) Gerstner took over as IBM CEO and Chairman on April 1, 1993. "Reader's Mail" (Chennai city, July 24, 2006, page 3) carried a protest by a reader against the levy of service tax of 12.5 per cent on money order commission charges ("M.O. service charges"). As another reader points out, the tax was withdrawn with effect from July 1, 2006. Across 16 (The Hindu Crossword 8662, July 22, 2006) was "Muse of Song (7)". The solution (The Hindu Crossword 8663, July 24, 2006) was "Euterpe". A reader says this is incorrect as Euterpe is a muse for erotic poetry. The muse for song is Polyhymnia, the reader adds. The Oxford Dictionary says Euterpe (Greek and Roman mythology) is the Muse of flutes, while Polyhymnia is the Muse of the art of mime. Other reference material says Euterpe is the Muse for music/lyric poetry, while Polyhymnia is the Muse for sacred poetry and geometry. A reader says that in the Agencies report "Garcia attacks as Woods slips at Open" (Earlier editions, "Sport", July 23, 2006) and under the sub-heading "Furyk in fine fettle", it was said that Furyk reached the turn in four over 31 to get to nine-under. It should have been four under. In "Swarna, Abishek win" ("Sport", July 24, 2006) and under the sub-heading "Premnath, Sivasankari triumph", the sentence was: "V.B. Chandrasekar, former Test cricketer, gave away the prizes." As a reader points out, this is factually incorrect as he did not play Test cricket though he did represent India in seven one day internationals. It should have been "former international cricketer".
