Madikeri: "Triple Play services" in which telephone, television and Internet will work simultaneously through a single cable, will be launched in Kodagu soon, according to BSNL in-charge General Manager T.K. Chandrashekar. Addressing presspersons here, he said field trials for the facility were on. Disruptions in the optical fire cable (OFC) would be a thing of the past. OFC could now be provided from the source to the place suggested by the subscribers, Mr. Chandrashekar said. He said there would be no waiting list in major exchanges of Kodagu in one and half years. Mr. Chandrashekar said during 2005-06, 19 mobile base transmission stations (BTS) were commissioned in various parts of Kodagu. Pre-paid service for landlines would be introduced in the district by November. Field trials were going on in Kolkata and other places in the country, he said. Subscribers could use recharging pre-paid coupons to operate the fixed phones, on the lines of pre-paid mobile phones. The facility would be first introduced in PCO booths, he said. Mr. Chadrashekar said three exchanges were upgraded at Kutta, Hudikeri and Srimangala and DOTSOFT technology was being used for computerisation of administration and billing facilities. The new version of the CDMA WiLL system had been installed at Somwarpet, Virajpet and Madikeri and 1,121 connections had been provided. Thirty additional BTS towers for Kodagu would be set up in 2006-07. He said the interruptions in signals of mobile phones was due to the hilly terrain and vegetation in Kodagu. He said all the 76 exchanges in the district would be connected by OFC. As much as 288 km of OFC would be laid. A base station control installation for mobile subscribers in Madikeri would be introduced by 2007. During 2006-07, eight centres each in Madikeri, Somwarpet, Kushalnagar, Virajpet and Ponnampet areas had been planned for providing broadband connections, he said. Deputy General Manager Jagannath said the BSNL has to recover an outstanding of Rs. 62 lakh from various subscribers, accumulated over 10 years. Efforts were being made by a separate cell to recover the dues. The revenue from fixed lines in Kodagu a month has crossed the Rs. 1.8-crore mark, touching nearly Rs. 23 crore a year.
