NEW DELHI: The monsoon session of Parliament began on Monday with a condemnation of the Mumbai blasts, a reiteration that the people of India would never allow the nefarious designs of terrorists to succeed, and a word of praise for the fortitude with which the terror-struck people responded to the "dastardly acts." Articulating the sentiments of the Lok Sabha, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said: "The House strongly condemns these dastardly and cowardly acts of the terrorists. Their nefarious deigns to halt the progress and even tempo of life and to divide the people of this country can never succeed." Demanding that the guilty be brought to book, he said, "We should all pledge to fight this menace and root out the scourge of terrorism, collectively and unitedly, with resolute courage and strength." In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Bharion Singh Shekhawat observed: "Those who intend to harm this nation and destabilise our society will never succeed in their evil design. Their despicable acts can be neutralised by our people by showing unity and will to resist." Both Houses also condemned the grenade attack that killed nine people and left 33 injured in Srinagar on July 11. The Houses also mourned the death of hundreds in the earthquake that struck Indonesia's Java island on May 27 and the tsunami that hit it earlier this month. While the Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day after obituary references to sitting member Vasant Chavan, the Lok Sabha paid tributes to former members Pravinsinh Solanki, P. Narasimha Reddy and Raja P. C. Deo Bhanj. The Rajya Sabha also remembered the former member, K. Gopalan.
