VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) would soon launch a `basic life support training programme' for school students throughout the State, as part of its social activities aimed at the betterment of the society, according to G. Raghavelu, State president of the IMA. Participating in the Doctor's Day celebration and family get-together organised by the IMA, Vellore branch, here on Sunday, Dr. Raghavelu said that the IMA has collected the statistics of the various schools in the State, and was currently engaged in the task of preparing the list of IMA members, who were willing and would be involved in the school training programme. Referring to the criticism, which the doctors' fraternity faced from the media especially the electronic media Dr. Raghavelu said that the Tamil Nadu State Branch (TNSB) of IMA was planning to launch its own satellite TV channel in order to counter the media criticism and provide a forum for airing the views of the doctors. He said that the IMA has always been insisting on its members to provide immediate and proper attention to any emergency patient coming to the hospital.
Several schemes
The State president said that the IMA had started several schemes for the welfare of the doctors. The IMA provided Rs. 50,000 to the insured member or his family member in the case of an acute illness. The IMA conducted a lot of programmes to the doctors to educate them on protecting themselves in consumer cases, he said.
Awards presented
On behalf of the IMA, the Superintendent of Police, Vellore, M. Ashok Kumar, gave away awards to doctors, S. Gnanagurudasan, V. Neelakandan, Sabitha Loganathan, Mebel A. Gladys, A.M. Ikram, M. Mani Elango, M. Chakrapani, T. Nandakumar, Geetha Arun, Ramanaiya, S. Kathiravan and W.T. Sivaram, medical consultant, Tamil Nadu Industrial Explosives Limited, Katpadi. S. Damodaran, president, IMA, Vellore branch, presided. M. Balasubramanian, national vice-president, IMA, T. Sadagopan, honorary State secretary, IMA, B.R. Ramasubramanian, member, Governing Council of the IMA College of General Practitioners, T. Kumaraguru and P.K. Kesavan, former State presidents of IMA, C.S. Palani, vice-president, IMA, TNSB, and R. Rajavelu, treasurer, IMA, Vellore, spoke.
