ERODE: Effluents from tanneries and textile units have been polluting the Kalingarayan canal causing health hazards to Kalingarayan farmers. Erring industrialists should be booked under Goonda's Act," said Kalingaryan Canal Farmers' Association at its meeting in Kombanaipudur near Kodumudi. The president of the Association, V.M. Velayutham, presided. Through a resolution, the Association thanked the Union Minister for Social Justice and Women Empowerment, Subbulakhsmi Jagadeesan and the Union Environment Minister, H. Raja, for ensuring the Additional Director of Central Pollution Control Board, D.C. Sharma's inspection of the canal. The Public Works Department should construct proper canal bunds and strengthen the banks of the canal. A road should be laid to transport PWD farmers' vehicles. The meeting urged the Tamil Nadu Government to protect Kalingarayan farmers from Pollution. The Government should shift tanneries and dyeing industries to Perundurai SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre. It also thanked the Government for waiving cooperative loans and granting new crop loans to farmers. The Government should fix parity price for paddy and turmeric. Thanking the Government for setting up a sugar mill at Elumathure near Erode, the meeting said that an ethanol unit should also be opened. The Government should enhance price for sugarcane supplied by farmers to sugar mills.
