Gobichettipalayam to get a facelift

R. Sundaram

Projects estimated at over Rs. 8 crore to be taken up

ERODE: Development projects estimated at over Rs. 8 crore will be taken up at Gobichettipalayam soon, said the Chairman of the Gobichettipalayam Municipality, Kandavel Murugan.

Mr. Murugan told The Hindu on Monday that the projects included a Rs. 4-crore proposal sent to the Government for water supply improvement. The scheme would ensure daily water supply.

A model

Further, a Rs. 2.15-crore proposal to lay roads at nine places was pending before the municipal council for approval. Drainages would be improved at Rs. 2 crore. If the schemes were completed, Gobichettipalayam would be a "model for other municipalities".

Under the Union Government's `Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns' (UIDSSMT), the Centre granted 80 per cent subsidy, and the State Government 10 per cent for development works in municipalities.

The specific municipality got to shell out only the remaining. Mr. Murugan said he would represent the Commissioner of Municipal Administration to include water supply improvement scheme, road works and drainage works under the scheme. The municipality had very limited funds, and loans it obtained as early as 1950 for water supply scheme was still pending and interest was being paid.

Keeripallam Odai was en eyesore, and efforts were on to desilt it. This required a huge sum. The Gobichettipalayam MLA, K.A. Sengottiyan, had assured to grant Rs. 18 lakh to construct a bridge across the Keeripallam Odai, he said.

Mr. Murugan said the survey for underground drainage project was over, and it was estimated at Rs. 23 crore.

The Government had insisted on public contribution for the project, but he was reluctant to do that. He wanted the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board to take over the project with 10 per cent of the share from the district administration.
