COIMBATORE: Soofiya Maudhany, wife of People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Maudhany, surrendered before Judicial Magistrate-III here on Monday and got a pending non-bailable warrant against her recalled.

She had visited the Coimbatore Central Prison on June 21, 2002, for meeting her husband, who is facing trial in the Coimbatore serial blasts case and, along with her aide Naushad, tried to smuggle in a cellular phone and a SIM card into the prison and picked up a quarrel with police personnel who frisked them.

The Race Course police registered a case against them under Sections 353 (preventing a government servant from discharging duty), 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman police personnel) and 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

As Ms. Soofiya Maudhany did not appear before the court, a non-bailable warrant was issued. In the meanwhile, Naushad was held on charges of planting a bomb at the Coimbatore Press Club in 2003 and detained at the Coimbatore Central Prison.

He was also remanded in a case of misbehaviour with the police in 2002. Ms. Soofiya Maudhany was also implicated in the case.

When he was produced before the court, he admitted to the charges in the 2002 case and the sentence against him was set off against the trial period undergone in detention.

Bhavani B. Mohan, counsel for Ms. Soofiya Maudhany, told The Hindu that she was complying with the direction of the Madras High Court to appear before the trial court for the recall of the warrant.

On producing two sureties with a solvency of Rs. 25,000, the magistrate ordered the recall of the warrant.

The case was posted to August 11 for trial. The petitioner was directed to appear for all hearings.
