ALAPPUZHA: An accused in liquor case, Prasannan of Edakkunnam, Nooranad, was found dead in judicial custody at Mavelikara on Monday. Relatives alleged that Prasannan might have died of torture either at the Mavelikara sub-jail where he was lodged or at the hands of excise personnel who arrested him. Meanwhile, District Congress Committee (DCC) president C.R. Jayaprakash demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident and called for a hartal in Mavelikara taluk on Tuesday to protest against the death of Prasannan. The relatives said a policeman arrived at their house on Monday morning and informed them about the death. They said the excise had taken Prasannan in custody on July 19. He was sent to Mavelikara sub-jail on July 20 by the court. Though they tried to meet him the next day, the jail authorities did not allow it. They tried to meet him again along with a lawyer on July 23, but in vain. The relatives said the body had marks of torture on it.
Probe demanded
They demanded a comprehensive investigation into the death and appropriate action against those who were responsible for it. Meanwhile, a group of people blocked traffic on Mavelikara-Pandalam Road in front of the Mavelikara taluk hospital protesting against the delay in conducting post-mortem. Later they dispersed following the intervention of representatives of people. The post-mortem was held in the afternoon.
Chief Minister's reaction sought
Mr. Jayaprakash said that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan should respond to the attack on excise officials by CPI (M) cadres at Kareelakkulamgara and the custodial death of Prasannan at Mavelikkara in the district.
