Chavakkad man held

in Iraq, say relatives

Thrissur: Navaz, 39, of Thekkenchery in Chavakkad, has been arrested by U.S. forces and lodged in the Basra jail, his relatives told the media here on Monday. Navaz, who worked in a private company in Kuwait, was arrested for reportedly not having valid documents while going to Iraq to supply food to American soldiers, his relatives said. The family claimed that they were informed about Navaz's arrest by one of his friends in Kuwait. Navaz, son of the late Hasan Ali of Thekkenchery, went to the Gulf in 2001.— Staff Reporter

`Plot to tarnish image of Sabarimala'

Pathanamthitta: Senior Tantri of Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala Kantaru Maheswararu said here on Monday that the controversy relating to Tantri Kantararu Mohanararu could be a conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the image of Sabarimala as well as the Tantri. A detailed probe into the whole issue should be initiated to bring out the truth, he said. — Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has posted Additional Director-General of Police Siby Mathews as Additional Director, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB). Hindalco employees plan stir

KOCHI: Workers at Hindalco (formerly Indal) will stage a dharna before the gates of the aluminium company at Alupuram on August 1 to demand the immediate reopening of the smelter unit of the company. The third anniversary of the closure of the smelter unit falls on August 1. — Staff Reporter

Two of family

found dead

KOCHI: Two members of a family were found dead and another battling for life at Mulanthuruthy on Monday morning. The deceased were identified as Joseph, 70, of Padipurakkal House, Mulanthuruthy, and his daughter, Susan, 30. Joseph's body was found in the well of the house while Susan was found smothered to death inside the house. Her four-month-old child is safe, the Mulanthuruthy police said. Joseph's wife, Kunjukunjamma, 60, was rescued from the well by the local people and personnel of the Fire and Rescue Services. Susan's husband, Sam, a native of Mavelikara, is absconding. — Staff Reporter

Seminar on human rights awareness

KOLLAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will organise a `Human rights awareness seminar' here on August 5. The seminar will be inaugurated by Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan at a function to be presided over by SHRC chairman V.P. Mohan Kumar. Commission member A. Lakshmikutty will deliver the keynote address. — Staff Reporter

Four held on charges

of cheating

Thiruvananathapuram: The rural police have arrested four persons on the charge of cheating as many as 15 people of Rs.3.5 lakhs each by selling them forged Australian job visas. Circle Inspector, Kazhakuttom, Muhammad Iqbal, identified the accused as Kunjkrishnan, 53, of Thalassery, John Mathew, 50, of Kollam and John Mathew, 50, and Babu, 52, of Kazhakuttom. They were produced before the court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

Activists of CPI(M), BJP clash

Thrissur: Tension prevailed in Vadanappilli, near here, on Monday following clashes between activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The houses of CPI(M) activists Ambalathuveettil Husain and Nalakathu Padu Vingal Shahul Hameed were attacked by suspected BJP workers, according to the police. A large posse of policemen has been deployed in and around Vadanappilly. — Staff Reporter

Thrissur: A book on actor Mammootty, edited by Navaz Punoor, will be released by writer Sukumar Azhikode here on Wednesday. Mammootty, directors Kamal, Sathyan Anthikad, actors Jagathy Sreekumar, V.K. Sreeraman, Padmapriya amd Meera, and Kerala Sahitya Akademi secretary P.V. Thrissur: Award-winning Malayalam film `Margam,' directed by Rajeev Vijayaraghavan, will be screened at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall here on Wednesday by the Chetana Media Institute. Dies of burns

Thrissur: Jeetu, 15, daughter of Kattungal Babu of Chazhoor in Thriprayar, was died of severe burn injuries on Monday, according to the police. She was rushed to the hospital, but her life could not be saved. A student of SNMHS, Chazhoor, she had set herself ablaze, the police said. A case has been registered. — Staff Reporter
