Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The Indian Leaf Tobacco Division of Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) on Monday provided meals to more than 4,000 victims of the fire accident at Swarnabharati Nagar in Guntur, while the Fair Price Shop Dealers' Association provided breakfast. Relief is pouring in for the victims from all sides and some of the local organisations even distributed food packets, milk and other eatables on a large scale to the affected people. The district administration provided bed sheets to all the victims that came in handy to all of them living in the makeshift tents or tin-roof partitioned temporary shelters. There was no dearth of food at the relief camps, but some people were finding it difficult to stay in the temporary shelters, as they were able to save some of their belongings and intended to shift into their own piece of land at the earliest. The coordination cell in the District Collector's office was channelising the large amount of relief material coming in and guiding officials on how to go about distributing them.
Distribution of utensils
Meanwhile, several organisations were collecting money, clothes and rice to be donated to the victims. Some NGOs came forward to distribute utensils, but till Monday, not many people were seen cooking and they largely depended on the food being supplied. The children, however, had enough milk supply and there was also additional supply being ensured for infants. Some students went back to school after two days, but some found it difficult to manage with not enough clothes/uniforms. Some schools announced that they would not insist on victims' children wearing uniforms for a couple of months. Meanwhile, slight rain on Monday made the makeshift tents slushy at places and sanitation took a beating. The district administration, however, kept a watch on the sanitation and ran a medical camp to ensure none got affected.
