MYSORE: The Commissioner and Director of Sericulture Aravind Jannu has promised to consider crop insurance for bivoltine rearers. He was speaking at a function held to distribute 2,000 layings of bivoltine hybrid "chawki" worms at the Government Silk Farm at Thandavpura, near the city, recently. The programme also marked the opening of a largescale "chawki" rearing centre at the Tandavpura silk farm. Mr. Jannu said that the viability of converting Tandavpura silk farms into a hatchery would also be considered. The introduction of crop insurance to bivoltine rearers was a long-pending demand of sericulture farmers. They said that the coverage of insurance to bivoltine rearers was introduced by the Department of Sericulture during the 1980s, but was withdrawn following mass failure of the crop. This was attributed to lack of proper bivoltine race and limited knowledge of preparing quality bivoltine layings. But there had been considerable progress now and bivoltine "chawki" worms were distributed to help the sericulturists. According to Sadanand, the opening of a "chawki" rearing centre at Tandavpura requires improvement of the soil; expansion of mulberry plantation; supply of electricity; repair of the incubation cold storage plant; and better irrigation facility.
