People face water scarcity

Staff Reporter

Problem aggravates in the last three days owing to maintenance work

PUDUKOTTAI: Inadequate drinking water supply has been crippling the residents in parts of the town for the past several years and the problem got aggravated in the last three days when supply was suspended due to some maintenance work on the pipelines.

Residents of several wards particularly those residing in Ward No. 10, 11, 12 and 13 are the worst-hit due to inadequate supply. They pointed out the supply for an hour, effected only on alternate days, was too meagre to meet the requirements.

A retired teacher, L. Venkataraman of Teachers' Colony, said that despite the residents' repeated plea, the supply has not been augmented for years together. A cross section of the local residents complained that massive extraction of drinking water using electric motors further aggravated the problem.

In the meantime, the Kamarajapuram unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has taken up a signature campaign in the four wards, mobilising the people's support to impress upon the Municipality the need for augmenting water supply.

The District executive member of the party, P. Shanmugam, who launched the campaign, said that about 10,000 residents of these wards were put to great hardship for want of adequate water. The signature campaign was also to demand additional facilities. The party would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and other Ministers to draw their attention to the felt-needs.

Collector, S. J. Chiru said that the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had initiated a proposal for setting up an overhead tank at Kamarajapuram. Identification of source with potable water was a major problem in the area.

As a temporary measure, water would be supplied through lorries in the affected wards in the town, he said.
