PATHNAMTHITTA: Hundreds of Hindus, including women and children, thronged the bathing ghats of various temples in the rivers Pampa, Achenkoil and Manimala in Pathanamthitta district on Monday morning to offer the annual vavubali (Pitrutharpanom) in the Malayalam month of Karkidakom. The ritual, popularly known as Karkidakavavu-bali, is believed to be aimed at propitiating the ancestors. The `Pithrutarpanom' was held at the Pampa-Triveni bathing ghats in Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala in the morning hours. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), the Viswa Hindu Parishad, the Akhila Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Nair Service Society karayogams, Yogakshema Sabha and various other Hindu organisations had made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of Pitrutharpanom at various temple ghats in the district. Hundreds of people offered the vavubali at the Sree Parthasarathy Temple ghats in river Pampa in Aranmula. The Haindava Seva Samiti had made arrangements for the vavubali in Ranni. The Pitrutharpanom was held at the Vettoor Mahavishnu Temple ghats, Thumpamon Vadakkumnatha Temple ghats, Pandalam Mahadevar Temple ghats in river Achencoil. The Balitharpanom was also held at the Kambithankadvu in river Kallada. In the river Manimala, the Vavubali was performed at the Thirumalida Mahadevar Temple ghats in Mallappally, Vennikkulam Komalam Devi Temple ghats and at Thondara kadavu in Kuttoor, near Thiruvalla, on Monday morning.
