Anganwadi workers plan hunger strike

New Delhi: Anganwadi workers and helpers, the key grassroot level functionaries of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), will begin a 10-day relay hunger strike here from Tuesday to press their demands that include providing them with job security.

"The Anganwadi workers and helpers are not recognised as employees of Government. They are only paid a meagre honorarium. They do not have any job security or social security," said the All-India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in a statement here.

Demanding the regularisation of Anganwadi workers as Grade III and helpers as Grade IV employees, the organisation said their honorarium should be increased to Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 per month respectively.

The federation demanded opening of Anganwadi centres all over the country.
