Supply seed at 90 per cent subsidy: TDP

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has sought supply of seed at 90 per cent subsidy in view of the near-drought conditions in several districts.

In a statement here on Monday, Y. Ramakrishnudu, Polit Bureau member, and K. Sivaprasada Rao, party spokesman, said farmers could raise crop only in 28 lakh hectares as against the normal 78 lakh hectares in the kharif season.

Even in the 28 lakh hectares, the crop was withering away. In such conditions, the Government should be liberal in coming to the rescue of farmers. It was not proper for the Government to say that it would supply seed at 30 per cent subsidy after it gets situation reports from the districts. Farmers would be in deep crisis by that time, forcing them to even take extreme steps, they reasoned. As many as 3,160 farmers had committed suicide in the last two years.
