KARIMNAGAR: Three persons of family committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Pogulapalli of Thimmapur mandal on Monday. The police said B. Mallavva (30) who was reportedly suffering from AIDS committed suicide. Agonised over his daughter's extreme step, M. Odelu (70), a labourer, administered pesticide to his granddaughter Anitha (7) and later consumed it himself. - Staff Reporter

Disciplinary action against policemen

ELURU: M. Jaganmohan Reddy, SP, on Monday initiated disciplinary action against Bhimadole Circle Inspector M.J.V. Bhaskara Rao, Dwaraka Tirumala Sub-Inspector K.T.D.V. Ramana Rao and his Denduluru counterpart B. Syama Sundar and three other constables for dereliction of duties. Dowry case filed against former Minister

ELURU: The police registered a case under Section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code against former Minister Maradani Ranga Rao and his family members following a complaint by his daughter-in-law Vijayanirmala. According to M. Jaganmohan Reddy, SP, Mr. Ranga Rao, his wife Bramarambha, son Srinivasa Prabhu and daughter Padmaja allegedly subjected the complainant to harassment and torture for money. In the complaint, Ms Vijayanirmala said all the money she got from her maternal house as dowry at the time of her marriage was taken away by her husband Prabhu and father-in-law.However,Mr. Ranga Rao denied the charge. - Staff Reporter

YSR's promise to Reliance dealers

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday promised Reliance Petroleum Dealers' Welfare Association members that he would take up their plea for extension of subsidies as done by PSUs to the RIL petroleum business division. Somparru Maruthi, association president, said that if the subsidies were extended to RIL, pricing of petroleum products would become competitive, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Hospitals told to get PCB authorisation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association has urged owners of nursing homes and hospitals to get authorisation from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) for safe disposal of biomedical waste by August 3. - Special Correspondent

1,452 in fray for 444 gram panchayats

KADAPA: Three hundred and nine gram panchayats and 4,345 ward members have been elected unopposed after withdrawal of nominations. Of the 808 gram panchayats, elections to 753 panchayats and 7,326 wards were notified for three-phased elections on July 29, August 2 and 6. After withdrawal of papers, 1,452 candidates were in fray for 444 gram panchayats and 6,528 contestants for 2,937 wards, District Panchayat Officer M. Satya Prakash said here on Monday. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: A total of 1,949 candidates have remained in the fray for 696 gram panchayats that go to the polls in the district. Out of 879 panchayats, 183 have been elected sarpanches unanimously. Out of 9,150 wards, 3,107 have been elected unanimously. - Staff Reporter

Water level

KURNOOL: Tungabhadra dam at Hospet is 2 feet short of the full level on Monday. As against the full capacity of 110 tmcft, 90.842 tmcft was collected. The level rose to 1,629.81 ft while the inflow was 44,787 cusecs. Srisailam level rose to 861.70 ft with storage of 155.162 tmcft. The inflow was 1,31,380 cusecs while outflow was 14,692 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Man murdered

KURNOOL: Thirty-year-old Mohd. Hussain was murdered at Chintakunta in Nandyal division on Monday. Rahim, brother-in-law of the victim, allegedly beat up Hussain with a stick causing a head injury, which resulted in his instantaneous death. - Staff Reporter
