Status report sought in Pratibha murder case

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday sought a status report on the Pratibha Srikantamurthy murder case. Pratibha, an employee of a call centre, was murdered by a driver of a vehicle meant to transport call centre employees.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice D.V. Shylendra, directed the Government to file the status report on the next date of hearing.

The Bench was hearing a public interest litigation petition in which the rise in crime in the city and the inadequate security to women, particularly to those working in private firms, was highlighted.

Justice S.R. Bannurmath, judge of the High Court, had written to the then (Acting) Chief Justice following the murder of Pratibha.

In his letter, he had pointed out the rise in crime in the city and also stated that the police should speed up the investigation in the case.

He had also suggested that the trial in this case could be expedited, so that it could act as a deterrent. The High Court had taken on record this letter and converted it into a suo motu public interest litigation petition.

The Bench had directed the police to file a report in this regard along with a report on the terrorist attack on the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
