Fake encounters not a good sign: Naidu

Staff Reporter

Says an inquiry by a competent agency will reveal facts

SHADNAGAR (MAHABUBNAGAR DIST.) : Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu has clarified that he was against fake encounters and reiterated that when the TDP was in power, it had never resorted to such acts in the Government's fight against naxalism.

He was responding to a question at a press conference here on Monday. Without making any pointed observations about Sunday's encounter in Nallamala forests where eight naxalites were killed, he said an inquiry by a competent agency would reveal facts.

When a scribe referred to the death in Sunday's encounter of Madhava, a top leader who was said to be involved in the Alipiri blast three years ago against Mr. Naidu when he was Chief Minister, he replied that he had nothing `personal' against the naxalites. He recalled that while Congress had some sort of `understanding' with the Maoists before the 2004 Assembly elections, it was now resorting to killings.

High alert

WARANGAL: An undeclared red alert prevails in the district with the police bracing up for any eventuality in the wake of the Prakasam district encounter.

The police force was put on high alert and more number of plainclothesmen were pressed into service to man all important installations and scan the residential areas of VIPs.

According to sources, the public representatives - MLAs and ministers were asked to be away from the district until further orders.

Meanwhile, the APSRTC has withdrawn 110 services. Mostly, the buses operating in the rural areas such as Eturunagaram, Mangapet, Kaleswaram and other agency areas were stopped since Sunday night as a precautionary measure.
