Traffic circles in Mangalore city in a bad condition

Special Correspondent

Rusted water spouts and defunct colour lights ruin the places

MANGALORE: About 50 circles in the city today wear a dismal look with plastic strings, bent lamp posts, the dried water bodies and rusted water spouts and defunct colour lights and broken pieces of concrete lying around.

There were efforts by the philanthropists in the past to make the this city more beautiful by adopting some of the beauty spots in the city including circles, parks, traffic islands and even pavements. The A.B. Shetty Circle, which was presented to the city by Vijaya Bank, was one of the best circles located in the prime area of the city.

According to sources at Vijaya Bank the Bank had spent a fortune for developing the circle. It had installed the `mist water spout' with colour lights, thick grass, colourful railings and central lighting system. But the Mangalore City Corporation has neglected this circle also.

Similarly Lady Hill circle, which is connected to NH-17, has also been neglected.

On the other hand sponsors such as Karnataka Bank maintain Mahaveera circle and Navabharat circle.

The D.C. office circle also has a large inventory, while the PVS circle and the Rao and Rao Circle at State Bank have some concrete structure. According to the Mayor of Mangalore K. Ashraf, these circles are not neglected. Their pumps, lights and the spout systems are functional. Though the greenery might of perished. The corporation is looking for good sponsors but no company has come forward.

In the meanwhile many circles have given way to traffic pressure.

To name few are the circle at Jyothi (now renamed as Dr. Ambedkar circle), Collector's gate, Karavali circle and Kankanady circle, Falnir, Clock Tower, Karangalapady, Mallikatta, Surathkal and many other places in the city.
