Thiruvananthapuram: The Southern Air Command (SAC) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated its 23rd Raising Day here on Monday. Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief S.Y. Savur was the chief guest at a get-together of serving and retired IAF officials organised as part of the festivities at Aakulam, the headquarters of the command. The SAC is the youngest of the five regional commands of the IAF. The SAC headquarters was inaugurated on July 21, 1984 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The headquarters was permanently located at Aakulam in October 1996. The SAC has control over IAF units in the southern peninsula of India, including the Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
