Water level

MADURAI : Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 123.70 feet with an inflow of 512 cusecs and a discharge of 1208 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 43.57 feet with an inflow of 961 cusecs and a discharge of 941 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 4290 mcft.

Grievance day meet

The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, and the Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dinakkaren, will hear grievances from residents of south zone at the zonal office on Tuesday.

They would also inspect civic facilities in wards 38 Jadamuni Temple and 39 South Krishnan Temple, a statement said.

"Revise commission"

The Life Insurance Agents Association has urged the Government to revise the commission given to agents, as it has remained static from1956 and not to reduce commission for new policies. At its 14th anniversary celebration held here on Friday, the association wanted the Life Insurance Corporation of India to increase retirement benefits to Rs.3.5 lakh and sanction pension to those who had served for 10 years. Those agents who had put in over five years of service should be recognised as direct agents.

Road roko

Members of the Madurai Bar Association resorted to a road roko in front of the district court premises on Monday. The agitation caused a traffic snarl for a few minutes on the busy Melur Road. They are on an indefinite strike against the amendment made to the criminal procedure code.

Competitions

District-level competitions for students of Standard IX to XII and arts and science colleges, polytechnics and Industrial Training Institute will be organised by Tamil Nadu Science Forum in September and State-level competitions in October. The topic for school students will be a write-up on `My favourite law of physics' with diagrams and models, and for college students `My dream engine' with a write up on its mechanism, principle and usage.

The Government of India had announced 2006 as the `year of appreciating physics' in everyday life as part of which these competitions were being held, a press release said. — Staff Reporter
