A cycle expedition to inspire youth

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Twenty-two cadets of Sainik School, Amaravathi Nagar, who began a bicycle expedition to Tiruchirappalli on Sunday, are expected to return to the institution in Udumalpet on July 28, after travelling 510 km.

Col. D. Choudhury, Inspecting Officer, Sainik Schools Society, New Delhi, who was on his annual inspection visit to all training units, flagged off the expedition. Three teachers of the Sainik School - A. Stephen, E. Elamurugu and S. Thangasamy - are accompanying the cadets.

During the tour, the cyclists will interact with young people and create awareness on making India a super power by 2020, as visualised by President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

The cadets will pass through Udumalpet, Palani, Ottanchathiram, Dindigul, Manaparai, Tiruchi, Kulithalai, Karur and Dharapuram, touch Udumalpet again and return to their campus at Amaravathi Nagar.

Besides carrying placards with inspiring slogans, the cadets will distribute pamphlets highlighting their mission.

Indian youth should have "intelligence, skill and foresight", the pamphlet said, and observed that these qualities ought to be "developed at the school level and perfected at the college level." India was poised to lead the world. "We should not be tied down by narrow domestic walls such as region, religion, language and caste," the pamphlet said.
