Helmets should be optional: Vatal Nagaraj

BANGALORE: Members of Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, led by its president, Vatal Nagaraj, have threatened to stage a dharna on July 28 at Mysore Bank Circle here if the State Government does not withdraw the rule making it mandatory for those using two-wheelers to wear helmets.

Mr. Nagaraj, in a statement here, said such a rule can be imposed by a "military-run government" and not in a democratic set-up. He demanded that the Government crack down on drunken driving, which is the main cause of accidents.

He has urged all two-wheeler riders to join the protest on Friday at 11 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Advocates want public prosecutor posts filled

BANGALORE: The Federation of Bar Associations of Karnataka and Karnataka Young Lawyers Vedike on Tuesday urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to fill 35 vacant public prosecutor posts. They also opposed enforcement of the rule making the wearing of crash helmets mandatory for riders of two-wheelers and pillion passengers from July 31.

Federation president K.N. Subba Reddy and office-bearers of the vedike met the Chief Minister and urged him to take up the construction of buildings for the circuit Benches of the High Court in Dharwad and Gulbarga.

Mr. Subba Reddy said it was unfortunate that the Government had not cooperated with the High Court in filling 12 posts of city civil judge in Bangalore.

Monkey captured

SHIMOGA: A monkey, which caused panic in the Gopala area here for the last few days by attacking and biting the passers-by, was captured by the staff of the Wildlife Division of the Forest Department on Monday. It was later released into the nearby forest. The same monkey was captured by the municipal staff in the past and released in the Gajnur forest. But it returned to the Gopala extension area. — Special Correspondent

HUBLI: The Hubi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has appealed to the general public to cooperate in solving the menace of stray cattle on roads. The corporation has taken up the task of rounding up stray cattle and transporting them to a cattle shed at Pinarapol, the Health Office of HDMC said in a release. People can join hands with the corporation by taking stray cattle to the Pinjarapol shed. For each cattle they will be given an award of Rs. 2,000, he has said in the release. — Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: Activists of Student Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) seized low-quality rice and toordal from a government school in Rayapura village on Tuesday, which is being used for the midday meals to children. They brought the issue to the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner promised to initiate action against the erring officials, according to a joint release by president district unit SFI, Manjunath, and president, district unit DYFI, Shavel Hameed.

HUBLI: Eight students of ICFAI National College, Hubli, have been selected for the national-level merit scholarships given by the ICFAI National College. SHIMOGA: The Kuvempu University has extended the last date for receiving applications for admissions to the postgraduate courses, post graduate diploma and certificate courses, up to August 1. All entrance tests for admissions will be conducted at the Jnana Sahyadri, the varsity campus at Shankaraghatta. Tests for the postgraduate MSW course will be conducted on August 2 and those for the Library and Information Science and Master of Accounting will be held at the post graduate centre in Davanagere on August 3. The entrance tests for the courses in BP.Ed and Physical Fitness test will be held on August 4 and those of the Journalism and Mass Communication on August 5. Protest

HASSAN: Activists of the Sangh Parivar took out a procession in Belur town on Tuesday, protesting against the alleged conversion by Christian missionaries in Tirupathi and serial bomb blasts in Mumabi, which claimed many lives. Activists led by Parvathe Gowda, president, taluk Bharatiya Janata Party unit, marched from Channakeshava temple and on reaching bus stand circle, they conducted a public meeting, where the leaders of Rashtriya Swayam Sevaka Sangha, Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajarangadal condemned serial bomb blasts by terrorists in Mumbai and criticised the rise in price of essential commodities by the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

2,894 engineering

seats allotted

BANGALORE: In all, 2,894 engineering seats were allotted to students under various categories till Tuesday in the ongoing seat selection process (counselling) of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET). Under Christian minority institutions, 11 of the 105 available BE seats were allotted till 5.15 p.m. on Tuesday. In General Merit category, there were 7,762 seats of which 2,823 were allotted. As many as 4,939 seats will be available for selection in this category on Wednesday. Among Jain minority institutions, none of the 61 available seats was selected till Tuesday. As many as 18 of the 126 seats available in Konkani linguistic minority institutions were taken. Under Tulu linguistic minority colleges, 42 seats of the available 413 were selected. — Staff Reporter

Soundarya Lahari

BANGALORE: Vedanta Bharathi recently organised a convention in Bangalore in which 8,000 women and schoolchildren chanted Soundarya Lahari. The programme was organised as part of the Chaturmasa Vrata of Sri Sankara Bharathi Swamiji of Yadathore Sri Yoganandeshwara Math, KR Nagar, on the Fort High School Grounds. Soundarya Lahari, authored by Adi Sankaracharya, contains slokas praising the all-powerful goddess. The swamiji explained the importance of chanting stotras of Adi Sankaracharya to purify the mind and soul. Advaita propagated by Adi Sankaracharya 12 centuries ago was still relevant, he said. The programme was attended by Bangalore South Lok Sabha member H.N. Ananth Kumar and the Chaturmasa Sanchalana Samithi president A.N. Jayaram.

NLSIU conference

BANGALORE: National Law School of India University (NLSIU) will hold its annual conference on Technology and Law on its premises in Nagarabhavi from July 26. This year's conference titled "Consilience 2006" focusses on Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) and seeks to influence a Government policy in this connection, according to a press release here. "Free/open source software is a pressing issue in the realm of Technology Law today, as it concerns various stakeholders from industry, software producers, policy makers in the government and the end user," the release said. Four held in connection

with GP chief's murder

MYSORE: The Mysore district police have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of Kadakola Gram Panchayat (GP) president Javara Nayak on July 21. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police S. Murugan gave the names of the arrested persons as Sahadeva (23), Manju (21), Umesh (22) and Papanayak (62), all residents of Kadakola. He said the four persons were arrested from a sugarcane field in Koragananjana Hundi, near Kadakola. The weapon used by them in the crime was seized, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Official status for Konkani

PANAJI: The Goa Tiatrists' Association, a body of Konkani tiatre artists, spearheading the agitation demanding official status for Konkani in Roman script, has given an ultimatum to the Congress-led alliance Government on Tuesday to bring an amendment Bill to the State's Official Language Act to recognise the Roman script in the Act before Friday. At a meeting convened by the association on Tuesday, it said should the Government fail to meet the demand, the supporters of Roman script would stage a protest. — Special Correspondent
