No decision on dates to discuss nuclear deal

  • Mumbai blasts, terrorism to be discussed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday
  • "Office of profit" Bill in Upper House on Thursday
  • Manmohan to make statement in both Houses on nuclear deal

NEW DELHI: The Government expects the Prevention of Disqualification (Amendment) Bill, popularly known as the "office of profit" legislation, to be come up in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

With the Rajya Sabha scheduled to discuss the Mumbai blasts and terrorism on Wednesday, the legislation will be taken up on Thursday before it comes before the Lok Sabha, most likely on Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said here on Tuesday.

Although no firm decision has yet been taken on dates for a discussion on the India-United States nuclear deal, Mr. Dasmunsi said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would make a statement in the two Houses next week. "Members will be free to seek a discussion on it or ask for clarifications," he said.

While confirming that in the Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee some members (the Opposition) had talked about moving a resolution related to the deal, the Minister said they had the right to do so.

With just a day left before the "office of profit" Bill is taken up, the Government has already initiated discussions with a number of parties. Mr. Dasmunsi said consultations had taken place with Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and Telugu Desam parliamentary leader Yerran Naidu.

At a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, it was decided to take up the Food Safety and Standards Bill on Wednesday. Other legislations include the Banking Companies and Finance Institutes Laws Amendment Bill, Banking Regulation Bill, Cantonment Bill and Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill. Consultations with the Left parties would take place over the next couple of days, he said.
