300 Indians to be evacuated today

Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Three hundred Indian nationals will be evacuated from Lebanon to Larnaca, Cyprus, on Wednesday, from where they will be brought back to India by air on Thursday, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

According to the spokesman, a total of 1,383 citizens had so far been picked up by Indian naval ships from Beirut and transported to Larnaca. Indian ships had also evacuated 47 Nepalese, 58 Sri Lankans and eight Lebanese, taking the total number of evacuees to 1,496.

Apart from the 300 people who will be picked up on Wednesday, further evacuation will take place as required. The Indian Embassy was said to be in touch with other citizens still living in Lebanon through community organisations, the spokesman added.

Some 12,000 Indian nationals were living in Lebanon at the time Israel launched air and ground attacks nearly two weeks ago.
