Anirban shares lead

NEW DELHI: Anirban Lahiri shot one-under 71to share the lead with Gaurav Pratap Singh and Bhawani Singh Parmar on the rain truncated opening day of the Royal Challenge Northern India amateur golf championship at the par-72 Classic Golf Resort here on Tuesday.

Only 10 groups managed to complete their rounds as heavy rains prevented further play in the first leg of the 2006-07 National amateur golf Tour. The remaining groups will complete their first round on Wednesday and will also play the second round.

Manav Jaini and Himmat Singh Rai carded level-par scores to be tied fourth. Lahiri, who is currently ranked number one of the Order of Merit, birdied the par-3 fifth hole, but a bogey on the seventh hole had him take the turn at level par. Lahiri dropped a shot on the 10th hole, but recovered the lost ground with birdies on the par-4 12th and par-5 18th holes.

The scores: Anirban Lahiri, Gaurav Pratap Singh, and Bhawani Singh Parmar 71; Manav Jaini and Himmat Singh Rai 72; Abhishek Jha and L. Selvadurai 73; Joseph Chakola and Balwinder Singh Mattu 74.
