BEIJING: China's Fujian, Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces are calling ships back to harbours and evacuating people to brace themselves for the upcoming typhoon Kaemi, local authorities said on Monday. As of 6 p.m. Monday in Zhejiang, ships and fishing vessels numbering over 25,000 have sought shelter in protected harbours, 80,000 people in low-lying areas were evacuated to safer places, and 185 million cubic metres of water in reservoirs and 50 million cubic metres in rivers were let out in a bid to prevent floods. By the same time, 622 ships plying in the seawaters of Fujian returned to harbours, after the provincial office for flood and drought relief ordered all people on vessels to return before 10 a.m. on Tuesday. In Guangdong emergency plans were drafted. Li Ronggen, Vice-Governor of the province, ordered all ships back and all people in dangerous areas evacuated.
