Police custody for

four suspects

COIMBATORE: The Judicial Magistrate VII has permitted the city police to take custody of four of the five suspects who were arrested with explosives on July 22. Haroon Basha, Maalik Baasha, Athikur Rahman, Tippu Sultan and K. Samsudeen were arrested in a pre-dawn search operation on July 22 and some documents, explosives and components for assembling Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were seized from them. They were remanded to custody on Sunday morning and lodged in the Salem Central Prison. Following a petition from the city police, the Magistrate on Tuesday granted police custody for four, except Malik Baasha. They will be in the custody for three days till 5 p.m. of July 28. The counsel will be allowed to meet them at 5 p.m. every day during the period of custody. — Staff Reporter

Court orders notices

in Balan case

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court ordered notices to the Home Secretary, Director-General of Police and the CB-CID among others on a writ petition seeking fresh investigation into the disappearance of former MLA M.K. Balan. Justice K. Ravirajapandian ordered the notices, taken by Special Government Pleader P. Wilson on behalf of the government. The matter was adjourned by eight weeks. The petitioner, B. Manimaran, son of M.K. Balan, alleged that politically influential persons and senior police officers were responsible for the disappearance and that actual offenders were shielded by the authorities. Balan has been missing since December 30, 2001. According to the police, he was kidnapped and murdered. — Special Correspondent

Ponmudi distributes appointment orders

CHENNAI: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi on Tuesday distributed appointment orders to polytechnic lecturers after the conclusion of counselling on Monday. A total of 123 teachers were given orders. Of this, 24 teachers are for the civil branch, 22 for mechanical, 15 for electrical, 17 for electronics, nine each for English and Maths; six each for Physics and Chemistry and 16 for Commerce. — Special Correspondent

Raids conducted

CHENNAI: More than eight premises in Chennnai, Chembanar Koil, Mayiladuthurai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Delhi were subjected to search operations on Tuesday by officials of the IT (Investigation Wing) under the section 132 of the Income Tax Act. It belonged to Mr. Venkatesan alias Maya M. Venkatesan, an industrialist, his brother and his associates. According to an official press release, M. Periasamy, who is a contractor, his brother, Radhakrishnan, a former Tamil Nadu AIADMK Minister, were covered in a separate operation and four of their premises were searched. About 150 officers and staff were engaged in the raids. The searches in the premises of Mr. Periasamy and his brother have so far revealed suppression of sales of about Rs.50 lakh in a blue metal crusher unit owned by them. — Special Correspondent

PDS rice seized

CHENNAI: About 300 bags of rice meant for public distribution system were seized in special raids conducted by officials of Railway Protection Force and Chennai Division in all trains and station premises on Chennai Central - Gummudipoondi and Central - Tiruvallur sections in the last 15 days. The seized commodity, worth Rs. 29,000, was handed over to authorities concerned, according to a railway press release. — Special Correspondent

Sivaganga: Over 150 members owing allegiance to the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers staged a demonstration here on Tuesday urging the Centre to expedite the process of forming VIth Pay Commission.

auto drivers

THENI: Autorickshaw drivers laid a siege to the town police station here on Tuesday demanding action against a head constable who had reportedly assaulted an auto driver.

In a petition, they said head constable Nagaraj intercepted an autorickshaw and argued with the driver Kumar (25) regarding with overloading. After a wordy duel, the petitioners alleged, the head constable assaulted him. Meanwhile, the head constable filed a complaint against the auto driver for having assaulted him.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 123.40 feet with an inflow of 352 cusecs and a discharge of 1013 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 43.73 feet with an inflow of 773 cusecs and a discharge of 741 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 4246 mcft.

Body recovered

ERODE: The body of a 15-year-old student was recovered from a well at Nasiyanure, 15 km from here on Tuesday.

According to the police, Jayaprabhu, son of Ramalingam of Nasiyanure had been suffering from severe fever and body pain. The boy in Class X had said he could not tolerate the pain. His parents had suspected it was chikungunya, and he had been undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, Jayaprabhu had been missing from Sunday afternoon, and his body was found in a well.

Newborn found dead

ERODE: The residents of Vairapalayam, a suburb of Erode, on Monday found the body of a newborn at a ladies public toilet on Vairapalayam Nethaji Road. As none claimed the baby, the police was informed, and a post-mortem examination was conducted. The residents received the body of the baby boy, and buried it. They pooled in money to perform last rites. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The district has met the target and topped the State in small savings for 2005-06, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Tuesday. The target was Rs. 185 crore, but the district collected Rs. 259 crore.

ERODE: The Regional Collector's review meeting on local body elections would be conducted here on July 28, said the Collector. He told the media that preliminary works for the elections had begun. The electoral roll would be prepared from the mother list. IT raid at former Minister's house

PUDUKOTTAI: Income Tax officials conducted raid in the house of former AIADMK Minister M. Radhakrishnan here on Tuesday. The raids were conducted at his residence at Rajagopalapuram here as well as in his brother's house at Parali village coming under the Tirumayam Assembly segment. The raid was also conducted at a crusher, said to be owned by Radhakrishnan, at Kulathupatti in the district. .

Exemption granted

TIRUCHI: About 132 physically disabled persons of Tiruchi district have been provided exemption from the minimum age-limit for grant of monthly pension, according to a release from Collector Ashish Vachhani.

The exemption was granted after an assessment by a medical committee recently. The beneficiaries included 15 visually handicapped and 39 mentally challenged persons, the release added.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.29 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 13,297 cusecs and the outflow 22,000 cusecs.

History-sheeter held under Goondas Act

TIRUNELVELI: The Commissioner of Police, Braj Kishore Ravi, has ordered the arrest of T. Appakutti (27) of Palayamkottai under Goondas Act. A statement said Appakutti was involved in several cases of attempt to murder, waylaying and death threats.He was arrested on Tuesday.

Collector R. Palaniyandi, on Monday, issued an order to detain Ganesan (44) and Mayandi (25) under Goondas Act on the recommendations of Superintendent of Police John Nicholson.

The duo were involved in many cases of extortion and dacoity. They were arrested by inspector Murugesan of Kovilpatti West police station.

Five arrested

Tuticorin: Five persons were arrested on a charge of possessing lottery tickets, and two persons for possessing toddy, during raids on Sunday and Monday.

A. Anaikutty (40), S Elangovan (56), M Subbiah (25), Gomu (52) and Mayandi (41) were picked up from the town with 192 lottery tickets in their possession. H Arasulingam (43) and A Rathinapandi (50) were arrested at Tiruchendur for having four litres of toddy with them.

Two suspended for issuing fake certificate

Nagercoil: Collector Sunil Paliwal has suspended two employees of Kaliyal and Kalkulam taluk offices for issuing a bogus community certificate to a student on Monday.

Babu (18) of Kilathur near Kulasekaram had applied for a community certificate at Kaliyal village office. Later it was found that the certificate was a bogus one. When this was brought to the notice of the Collector, he directed the tahsildar of Vilavancode, Leela Bai, to conduct an enquiry. Based on the report submitted by the tahsildar, the Collector suspended the assistant of Kaliyal village officer, Baladevan, and watchman of Kalkulam taluk office, Francis. — Staff Reporter
