Dalits to urge government to retrieve land

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Dalits of the Siruthavur village in Kancheerpuam district, along with Communist Party of India's (Marxist) state secretary N. Varadarajan, will meet Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Secretariat on Wednesday. They would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging the Government to take steps to retrieve their land.

According to a party release, 20 Dalit families of the village were given 53 acres of land for farming by former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai . But the pattas of these lands were allegedly transferred in the name of some body by issuing duplicate pattas. The CPI (M) and the Tamil Nadu Vivasaigal Sangam had been agitating for cancellation of these duplicate pattas and returning the land to the Dalits.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss, on Tuesday, demanded a judicial enquiry into this issue.

In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said that enquiry should be conducted to bring out the truth and the details made available to the people.
