Inter-school meet from today

HYDERABAD: The annual inter-school basketball championship for the Dr. Emily Emanuel trophy will be held from July 26 to August 3.

The AP Basketball Association has adopted the tournament as its premier inter-school event in which 28 teams from the twin cities will take part. The matches will be held at St. Andrews HS, Bowenpally.

Addressing a press meet on Tuesday, tournament director Norman Issac said that the boys' section would have 16 teams and the girls' section, 12.

Norman said 24 teams had wished to take part in the boys' section but in order to maintain the standard at a high level, the organisers decided to restrict the number of entries to the sixteen.

In both the sections, the teams have been divided into four groups and the winner of each group will play in the semifinals.

Just like last year, each team will be given a cash award for participation even if it loses in the first round. The total prizemoney has been hiked to Rs. 93,400, which is a jump of Rs. 20,000 from the previous edition. — Special Correspondent
