Shooting
ZAGREB: Navnath Farthate clinched the junior men's air rifle gold on the third day of the World shooting championship on Tuesday. Navnath shot 596 out of 600 to win the gold, a solitary point ahead of local lad Petar Gorsa in a field of 81 shooters. The Indian had a superb start and kept the flow with a series of 100, 100, 99, 100, 99 and 98. India now has two gold and two bronze medals so far in the current edition. India had only four medals to show from all the previous World championships put together. Avneet Kaur clinched the second Olympic quota place despite finishing eighth in women's air rifle. Avneet went into the final with a 397 out of 400, and a bad fourth shot in the final when she had a 8.1 spoilt her chances of finishing better.
Recovers
Avneet, who had won the silver in the Commonwealth Games behind Tejaswini Sawant, recovered, after a bad start of 97, in a breathtaking fashion as she shot three perfect rounds of 100 thereafter. Tejaswini was not that good this time as she ended up with a 394. The third Indian shooter, Olympian Deepali Deshpande could muster only a 390 and India missed the bronze by six points. There was a more agonising miss in the 25-metre pistol junior men's event, as the Indian team of Zakir Khan, Pushpender Singh and Nikhil Yadav lost the bronze by one point. Zakir Khan who was sitting pretty at the fourth spot after the precision stage slipped to the seventh spot eventually with a 572, but his teammates failed to pull for the combined cause.
