Kambissery award for Cherooppa

KOLLAM: The maiden Kambissery Memorial Journalism Award instituted by the Kollam Press Club has been won by Assistant Editor of Madhyamam T.P. Cherooppa. The award is for the best editorial in a Malayalam daily. Mr. Cherooppa wins the award for the editorial `Irayakkapedunna Shaishavam,' which appeared in Madhayamam on June 24 2006. The award which carries a cash prize of Rs.10,000, a trophy and a citation, will be presented to him at a function to be held here on July 27-Staff Reporter.

Provident Fund adalat on August 10

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bhavishya Nidh Adalat of the Employee's Provident Fund Organisation will be held at the Provident Fund Office at Pattom here on August 10. The PF members of Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts should send their complaints quoting PF Account Number/ PPO Number so as to reach the Public Relations officer, Bhavishyanidhi Bhavan, Pattom P.O., Thiruvananthapuram - 4. Second batch arrives from Lebanon

KOZHIKODE: Some of the Keralites who arrived as part of the second batch of Indians from Lebanon landed at the Karipur airport near here in the afternoon. An official release put the names of those who reached the airport as Jinsi Joseph (Ernakulam), Sundareshan Ushakumari (Pathanamthitta), Radhamani Gopinathapillai (Kollam), Saifudheen Malappuram (Malappuram), Jayan Pattathil (Thrissur), Jiji Michael (Alappuzha), Bhaskaran Santhoshkumar (Kollam), Devanandan (Malappuram) and Ajeesh Ambatt (Malappuram). — Staff Reporter

AIYF takes out march to DDE office

KOZHIKODE: The district committee of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) organised a march to the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) office here on Tuesday. The march was organised demanding restoring of posts cut short during the UDF rule and appointing persons to the vacant posts with immediate effect. — Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: As many as 250 physically challenged persons will be given wheelchairs by the Lions Club International District 324E5 under a welfare project being implemented in association with the Hope Charitable Trust and the Sathyam Services Trust, Lions regional chairman Ratnakumar Mallisserry has said. — Special Correspondent

Cases registered against BJP workers

Thrissur: The police on Tuesday registered cases against 30 Bharatiya Janata Party workers following the attack on the houses of two Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists at Vadanappilly, near here, on Monday. — Staff Reporter

Five injured

Thrissur: Five workers were injured when a beam and a pillar on the third floor of an auditorium at Kecheri, near here, collapsed while construction was in progress on Tuesday. Subhash, 24, Shaju, 37, Baby, 39, Ganesan, 45, and Madhu, 35, have been admitted to two private hospitals. Local residents, led by Choondal panchayat vice-president Iqbal, and a police team, led by Kunnamkulam Circle Inspector Haridas and Additional Sub-Inspector Karunakaran, carried out the rescue operations. — Staff Reporter
