MYSORE: The silver jubilee celebrations of IT major Infosys will be used as an occasion to showcase its Mysore campus. It will coincide with the induction of foreign graduates recruited directly from American campuses.

Sources told The Hindu that the celebrations were being held on the Mysore campus as the company wanted to showcase its Global Education Centre here. It was the largest of its kind in the world could train 4,500 professionals at a time and was set for expansion, they said.

The celebrations slated for July 30 will coincide with the induction of foreign graduates recruited from campuses in America. This perhaps signals in what could be called the reversing of the concept of "off-shoring" that hitherto meant loss of jobs to India and other third world countries. It is perhaps for the first time that an Indian company is going on a mass recruitment drive in campuses abroad.

An Infosys release recently announced that 300 college graduates would join the firm directly out of U.S. universities and the recruitment process would be expanded to hire 25 college graduates from the United Kingdom in 2007 as part of its ongoing commitment to create a diversified global workforce.

At present, Infosys employs nationalities from 25 countries. Those hired recently will be trained at the Infosys centres across India for six months before returning to Infosys offices in the U.S.

It was only last year that a batch of nearly 100 Chinese students came underwent training modules on the Mysore campus. They were here at the behest of its Government to learn the discipline and work culture in Infosys.

An Infosys release said more than 100 employees from American universities would begin their career in August at the Infosys Global Education Centre in Mysore, where one of the largest corporate education centres of its kind in the world is located. "They will participate in a customised education programme for four months. After this, they will be relocated to various development centres in India for another two months before they return to Infosys locations in the U.S. Along the same lines, a pilot program will be conducted to recruit students from universities in U.K.," the release added.

This initiative would be the first instance of Infosys recruiting graduates abroad for permanent positions.

Students from schools such as Stanford Graduate School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management, Harvard Business School and the Said Business School of Oxford had been competing to visit Infosys' Bangalore campus for InStep, the Infosys internship programme, the release added. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, will be the Chief Guest.
