NEW DELHI: G. N. Gopal defeated a woefully out-of-form S. Kidambi to ensure his second nine-game International Master norm after the ninth round and penultimate round of the Balaguer International Open chess tournament in Balaguer, Spain, on Monday. Gopal, a former National junior champion, now has 5.5 points. Irrespective of his final round result against Algerian IM Aimen Rizouk, Gopal is sure of the norm. The Kerala-lad made his first IM norm in the World junior championship in Istanbul last November.
The results (9th round, involving Indians): Nidjat Mamedov (Aze, 6) bt Abhijeet Gupta (5.5); Julio Granda Zuniga (Per, 6) bt S. Satyapragyan (5); Aleksander Colovic (Mkd, 5.5) drew with Lanka Ravi (5.5); G. N. Gopal (5.5) bt S. Kidambi (4.5); Mathias Roeder (Ger, 5) drew with Eesha Karavade (5); P. Konguvel (5.5) bt Lazaro Lorenzo De La Riva (Esp, 4.5); Boris Bruned (Esp, 4) lost to Vishal Sareen (5); Abhyudaya Rajpurohit (3.5) lost to Albert Ramon Solans (Cat, 4.5); Sahaj Grover (4.5) bt Albert Sanuy Moncasi (Bnv, 3.5).
