Confusion at Christian colleges' counselling

Ravi Reddy

Authorities fail to provide list of colleges and other information to students

  • ICET counselling held simultaneously at seven centres
  • Without displaying list of colleges, UCPCMA authorities ask rank-holders to get registered
  • Students seeking admission in Catholic institutions turned away as they do not come under UCPCMA

HYDERABAD: The first day of counselling for admissions into MBA and MCA courses by the Unaided Christian Professional Colleges Management Association (UCPCMA) on Tuesday ran into trouble as authorities failed to furnish the list of participating colleges leaving a large number of students in the lurch.

The UCPCMA failed to furnish the necessary information to students and their parents who were forced to wait from 9 a.m. Counselling finally began after 1 p.m. and the admissions could not be completed due to lack of final list of colleges.

According to the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, there are 24 MBA and 46 MCA Christian minority colleges in the State offering 1,370 and 2850 seats respectively and the ICET counselling was on simultaneously at seven regional centres. Not all Christian minority colleges joined the UCPCMA counselling.

    At their wit's end

Even without displaying the list, the authorities asked rank-holders to get their names registered after paying Rs. 200 and get their certificates verified. Many rankers who were scheduled to attend the ICET counselling in Osmania University and came to Hitex were at their wit's end. Some parents walked out alleging that they were taken for a ride.

"Immediately after registering the name, they hurriedly completed verification and asked the students to go to the counselling centre for admission without giving the list of colleges," parent of a girl from Guntur told The Hindu .

Many students, who hoped to get admission in Catholic institutions, were disappointed as no such college was part of the UCPCMA. "I came from Kadapa in the hope that my daughter will secure admission in a Catholic institution. But to my shock, they wanted me to admit her into one of the Christian minority colleges under UCPCMA", a parent complained.

However, UCPCMA convener G. Jagmohan Das said that the association was desperately trying to get the final list of colleges. "Our association has received the list which is being updated," he said. Repeated enquiries on the number of colleges to which admissions could be done drew a blank.
