Minister's assurance to blast victims' kin

HYDERABAD: Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said on Tuesday the Government would persuade the management of Anjana Explosives in Nalgonda district to pay ex gratia to the families of four persons killed in an explosion in the factory on July 18. Woman kills child, herself

ADILABAD: Lavanya, 27, from Jainad mandal headquarters village reportedly hanged her 14-month-old daughter Sreelekha before hanging herself on Monday night allegedly due to dowry harassment. According to a police complaint lodged by Lavanya's father Raghav Reddy, his daughter's in-laws were harassing her for Rs. 50,000, part of the dowry he had agreed to pay at the time of marriage three years ago. - Staff Reporter

Murder case against Congressmen

ADILABAD: The Koutala police on Tuesday registered a case of murder against an unidentified Congressmen who allegedly killed Allam Sattaiah, 30, a Telugu Desam Party worker at Koutala mandal. Sattaiah was allegedly killed by Congress workers in the morning. - Staff Reporter

Students drowned

KHAMMAM: Two students of a private engineering college were drowned in Kinnerasani river near Palvancha on Tuesday. The police said a group of students got into the river for swimming. Two of them -- Kokkara Pradeep Kumar and Minavath Srinu -- were washed away. - Staff Reporter

New train-halt

HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad-Gudur-Secunderabad Simhapuri express will halt at Singarayakonda railway station for one minute in both directions. The train from Secunderabad will arrive at the station at 5.48 a.m. and leave at 5.49 a.m. In the return direction it will stop at Singarayakonda at 10.50 p.m. and leave at 10.51 p.m. - Staff Reporter

National Talent Test

on November 12

HYDERABAD: State-level National Talent Test Search (preliminary) examination for class X will be held on November 12 in Telugu, Hindi, Urdu and English at all district headquarters. National-level Talent Search Examination for class VIII will be held on the same date. September 12 is the last date for submission of applications. Rythu Sangham's plea

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham has urged the Government to drop its policy, "being implemented at the instance of the World Bank," of taking up contract farming and sowing crops other than paddy. This policy would deprive farmers of their land, a statement issued here on Tuesday alleged. - Special Correspondent

YSR to review farm conditions

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will review the agricultural conditions with Collectors and top officials through a video-conference on Wednesday. According to an official release, he will review the situation in each district and discuss alternative plans. Meanwhile, Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy reviewed the situation with Agricultural Commissioner Poonam Malkondiah. Officials told him the conditions were not conducive, though there was possibility of rain in a few days. - Special Correspondent

Minor raped

NIZAMABAD: An eight-year-old girl studying in class II was allegedly raped by 25-year-old Shabbir alias Basheer, at 300 Quarters under the V Town police station limits on Monday. According to Sub-Inspector D. Balaji Shabbir who visited the school during lunch break allegedly lured the girl with chocolates, took her to an abandoned quarter, raped her and fled the scene. Mr. Balaji said Shabbir had earlier served a sentence for raping a 12-year-old girl . He was set free recently. - Staff Reporter

Claims of Gulf war victims

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector M. V. Satyanarayana has asked the Gulf war victims and their families to submit their claims to the respective mandal revenue officers in the district for the reimbursement of the same through United Nations. In a press note here on Tuesday, the Collector stated that a total of 46 people from Karimnagar district have been victims of Gulf war which took place between 1990-91, according to the report submitted by the UN. The people might have been injured or lost their lives in the war. Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

KARIMNAGAR: Two persons were killed when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling was hit by an RTC bus on the outskirts of Chenjerla village in Manakondur mandal on Tuesday afternoon. Police sources said the auto was proceeding from Karimnagar to Chenjerla when the RTC bus, which was coming from Warangal at a high speed, hit it after overtaking two lorries. Auto driver Ilaiah (28) and passenger P. Srinivas (24) died on the spot. The auto was mangled in the accident. Staff Reporter

Man found murdered

Sangareddy: Uppari Prabhakar alias Nani (24), a resident of Pulkal was found murdered near the pump house in his farm on Tuesday. According to the police, Prabhakar had recently divorced his wife and reportedly had an illicit relation with a woman hailing from the nearby Tanda. He was also accused in two theft cases.. -Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: The rural police on Tuesday arrested one person named Sardar of Malkapur tanda and recovered one-quintal dry ganja worth about Rs.1 lakh from him when he was transporting it in an autorikshaw. -Staff Reporter

Gupteswar temple

JEYPORE: Thousands of Bol Bom devotees thronged the Gupteswar temple on the banks of Sabari river in Koraput district to pour holy water on the lingam of Lord Gupteswar in the month of Sravana on Sunday. The devotees included children and women who had walked 60 km barefoot to the temple carrying pots of water from Kolab river. — Correspondent

Bandh observed by

private bus owners

JEYPORE: The Koraput district private bus owners association observed a bandh protesting against the alleged misbehaviour of the staff of the Koraput district Collector's office on Sunday. They alleged that when the association's representatives submitted a memorandum at the Collector's office, the staff misbehaved with them.

The bandh affected rural bus services to Koraput, Malkanagiri and Nowrangpur. The association warned that the bandh would continue till the staff apologised. — Correspondent

Rajahmundry: R. Rajendra Prasad, chief medical officer of AP Paper Mills, was appointed the new district chairman (324 C-1) on Tuesday. District governor B. Seetha Kumari in a statement said that Dr. Rajendra Prasad had taken up number of social service activities and medical camps in four revenue districts under Lions district. With the new appointment, Dr. Rajendra Prasad has to assist Seetha Kumari in undertaking different social activities in the Lions district.

Sanskrit scholar

passes away

KURNOOL: Writer, social reformer and Sanskrit scholar Gadiyaram Ramakrishna Sarma expired after a brief illness on Tuesday. He was 87. Mr. Sarma, an expert in history and archaeology, penned `Vidyaranya Swamy' in Telugu which was translated into English and Kannada languages and contributed hundreds of research papers on history. — Staff Reporter

Doctor's gesture

KURNOOL: A doctor P. Srinivasa Reddy has bailed out a student of Birla Institute of Technological Sciences (BITS) at Pilani by donating Rs. 20,000. Mr. Venugopal, a poor student from Parla in Kurnool district, who is studying B. Phamacy third year at BITS, was short of Rs. 20,000 after securing an educational loan of Rs. 45,000 from a bank.

ABVP plea to TTD

TIRUPATI: A delegation of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday presented a memorandum to TTD's Joint Executive Officer Balaramaiah demanding display of the portraits of Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Padmavathi be made mandatory in all TTD educational institutions. The delegation also urged the TTD management to weed out those indulging in proselytising in the TTD educational institutions and in their hostels.

3 held in excise raids

Madanapalle : Three persons were arrested and 4,140 litres of jaggery wash and 40 litres of liquor was seized from different villages in Madanapalle in raids conducted recently by the Prohibition and Excise staff. Madanapalle Circle Inspector Chandran carried out the raids under the supervision of the Excise Superintendent. Those arrested were Ramana, P. Anji and T. Vani. — Correspondent
