Polls: police wary of naxal retaliation

Special Correspondent

In the past, Maoists had struck just before elections

  • Red alert sounded in some mandals
  • Earlier, Maoists used to sneak into Orissa after an offence
  • Now, that State too has banned the outfit

Srikakulam: The administration is gearing up for the three-phase elections beginning from July 29. It will pose a challenge to the police toobecause of the developments in the last few days. There were instances in the past when Maoists had resorted to large-scale destruction in the district when their prominent leaders were killed. Since Madhav, who was killed in an encounter with the police in Nallamala forests, was a top leader Maoists may retaliate by destroying Government property or attacking people's representatives. Senior TDP leader Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu was attacked just before the Assembly election in 2004.

Senior police officials said that the force was geared up to face any challenge. This time police have some advantages. In the past Maoists, then known as People War Group, used to sneak into Orissa after committing an offence. Now, with Orissa too banning the Maoists, passage to that State will not be easy. Also police in the two States have been carrying on joint operations with good results.

A red alert has already been sounded in mandals like Bhamini, Sitampeta, Mandasa, Baruva,Vajrapukkotturu aand Uddanam areas. Vehicles are regularly checked. Political leaders who are likely to be the targets of Maoists attack were advised not to visit these affected areas. Night patrolling has also been intensified.

    Election dates

Since elections will be held in three phases — July 29, August 2 and 6 — the police can mobilise forces to the division where elections are held.

According to officials, there would be three Sub-Inspectors of Police in each mandal to oversee election as against one in the just concluded elections to the Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishads. There would be 150 mobile parties too.
