CHECKING OUT: Amalapuram MP G.V. Harsha Kumar watching a lesson designed by K-Yan, a community computer devoce, in a girls high school in Kothapeta along with students and teachers.
Ambajipeta (East Godavari): The picturesque Konaseema area is in the news due to a novel method of learning, which is catering to the computer-based teaching needs of a whole class of students. "It is a wonderful experience for us. We never dreamt that such a device will be used for teaching. Now I want to tell the rest of the world that IT revolution has reached interior rural areas," said G. Sridevi, English teacher in the Kothapeta Government Girls High School. G.V. Harsha Kumar, MP, from his MPLADS funds has provided K-Yan - an integrated community computer device - to enhance the teaching effectiveness in all schools in his constituency, including the Kothapeta Government Girls High School having strength of some 800 girl students. Mr. Harsha Kumar gave 19 K-Yans to 19 mandal headquarters in his constituency and one more in Amalapuram Municipal Corporation. "I want to take IT to the doorsteps of rural students, which is a dream of Rajiv Gandhi. I asked K-Yan to translate the lessons from first class to 10th class from English to Telugu and with the background voice also in the mother tongue," said the MP. From maths and science to history and geography, from crafts and skills to ideas and concepts, K-Yan can be used in all classes at all levels. K-Yan has been developed by IETS in collaboration with IIT Bombay to meet the urgent needs of a low-cost new media product specially designed for group learning in schools and other learning communities. K-Yan community computer from IL&FS Education & Technology services (IETS) combines the functions of a multimedia computer, DVD/VCD/CD player, CD writer, DLP projector, Internet surfing, video conferencing, large format flat television and visual audio system in a single compact unit. The result is a completely integrated, easy to use product with an ultra-large display up to 300 feet, making it ideal for all group viewing needs. "K-Yans has been loaded with educational software in Telugu and Urdu, mapped to the Government syllabus. Schools have reported increased enrolment, improved attendance and performance by students," said Rajat V. Desai of IL&FS Education & Technology services (IETS).
