ELURU : B.G. Reddy, Additional Commissioner, Income Tax Department, on Tuesday said all efforts would be made to ensure the strike proposed by the Group-I officers and staff of the I-T department on July 31, would not affect the filing of returns by tax payers . The personnel of the I-T Department have decided to strike work under the banner of Joint Council of Action with a charter of demands, including revision of pay scales of some cadres and filling of vacancies in the department.
Smooth affair
Addressing a press conference, Mr Reddy said it would be a smooth affair on the day, which happened to be the last day for filing of returns for individuals who are not having income under the head of profits and gains from business or profession. He said the officers would man all the I-T offices at Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Tanuku, Palacole and Bhimavaram in the district as a substitute to the striking personnel. In addition, the I-T offices would remain open on July 29 and 30 in order to help the department cope with the rush of taxpayers. He informed 13 post offices in West Godavari district were designated for filing of returns, in addition to the I-T offices. The taxpayers could have their returns filed in the post offices free of cost by enclosing an envelope cover bearing the Permanent Account Number and the details of the assessing officer under whose jurisdiction they fell. The Additional Commissioner also informed the date for filing of returns by non-corporate tax payers, including individuals, firms, association of persons, body of individuals, local authorities, partners of the firms, charitable trusts and institutions who came under auditable and no-auditable categories was extended up to October 31 from July 31.
