NEW DELHI: Describing the defeat of the Congress candidate in the Subhash Nagar municipal by-election here as a "serious matter", Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma on Tuesday said he would be sending a report to the party high command on the factors that led to the defeat. Talking informally to newspersons, Mr. Sharma said the issue of power, water, sewer and price rise had certainly played an important role in turning the voters' mood in favour of the Opposition. "The party would go into the `self-introspection' mode to assess what led to such a poor showing at the hustings," he added. Asked if failure of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her ministerial colleagues and other senior party leaders to canvass for the party candidate had a bearing on the result, Mr. Sharma said it would not be right to say that but added that it was all part of the strategy. "I will be sending a report to the party leadership on what all corrective measures need to be taken to ensure that such a situation does not recur during the MCD elections scheduled for early next year,'' he added.
"Part of democracy"
Mr. Sharma, who had taken charge of the party's campaign in the Subhash Nagar by-election, said victory and defeat were part and parcel of democracy. "However, every result has to be taken seriously. I am hopeful that this is just an aberration and the mood of the electorate would change by the time of the MCD and Assembly polls. We will work together and set the situation right so that people come and vote for the Congress in future."On the other hand, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan said the election verdict showed that people were now fed up with the Congress and its "anti-poor and anti-people policies". He said the Subhash Nagar result had indicated that mis-governance would not be tolerated by the people. The BJP MLA from Saket, Vijay Jolly, said the verdict against the Congress had proved that it had failed to work in the interests of the people. The poor water and power situation in the Capital coupled with failure to address issue of corruption had contributed to the defeat of the Congress candidate, he added.
