Stock of beedi leaves lost in fire accident

  • Three godowns storing beedi leaves catch fire at Old Mancherial of Adilabad
  • Beedi leaves contractor applies to Oriental Insurance for settlement of claims
  • Insurance company attributes delay to late submission of surveyor's report

KARIMNAGAR: The Andhra Pradesh Beedi Leaves Contractors Association executive committee member and district secretary T. Shankar has alleged that the Oriental Insurance Company Limited was delaying the settlement of a fire accident claim in spite of submission of all reports.

In a press note here on Tuesday, the district secretary said that a fire accident happened in a godown in Old Mancherial of Adilabad district on April 13, 2005 wherein the entire beedi leaves stocks worth some lakhs were gutted. A total of three godowns caught fire and all were storing beedi leaves.

A case was registered and the police authorities and fire services authorities have given a report stating that there was "no foul play and it was clear fire accident." He said that the beedi leaves contractor Md. Anwaruddin had applied to the insurance company for the settlement of claims along with all necessary documents, but in vain. Incidentally, the same insurance company of Maharashtra State had already settled the claims of two contractors, whose stocks were also gutted in the same fire accident in old Mancherial.

    Officials contacted

Mr. Shankar said he also sent communication to the insurance company's chairman and managing director at New Delhi, the regional manager in Hyderabad, divisional manager and branch managers, but in vain. When contacted over phone, the insurance company divisional manager in Warangal, Ravi Kumar said that "the settlement of the insurance claim is under process and it got delayed because of late submission of surveyor's report."
